A Moroccan rug (also known as a Berber rug) is a hand-woven or hand-knotted textile traditionally crafted by the Amazigh (Berber) tribes of Morocco.
These rugs are renowned globally for their artistic authenticity, geometric symbolism, and high-quality natural materials.
Handcrafted : Every authentic Moroccan rug is produced on a manual loom. They are either hand-knotted (with a pile) or flat-woven (kilim style).
Natural Materials : They are predominantly made from 100% sheep’s wool, often sourced from local mountain breeds. Some decorative rugs also use cactus silk (sabra) or cotton.
Tribal Designs : Patterns are usually geometric (diamonds, zigzags, lines) and serve as a visual language. They often represent stories of fertility, protection, or the weaver’s personal life.
Irregularity : Unlike factory-made carpets, Moroccan rugs often have charming asymmetries. These « imperfections » are a hallmark of genuine tribal art.
